How Much Water Should I Drink In A Day: Does it make a difference?

In Health by Kelly2 Comments

As a massage therapist I perform daily body assessments on each and every client that walks through the door. As I palpate the clients to determine what areas to work on for that session I can usual tell if the person is drinking enough water based on how there skin looks , feels and smells (yes, smells). In this article I will cover how much water you should be consuming a day and what are the benefits of proper hydration. I will also cover the benefits of adding lemon to your water and lastly, I will cover the best bottles to keep your water cold this summer. Bottoms up!

How much water should you drink in a day?

The human body is made up of 80{aa85435535b2bb3a4ba78547bb21fc32eb7710b0e77a951858af600607b97eba} water; your brain, muscles, joints, and spinal fluid depend on proper water hydration in order to function. A long time ago I heard you should take your body weight and divide that in half and that is how much in ounces you should have in a day, that’s a lot but is that rule accurate?

According to the Mayo Clinic, men should generally drink about 13 cups of water a day, while women should aim for nine. But if you want to determine the exact amount you should be drinking by your body weight, it’s easy to do.

Step 1: Take your weight (in pounds) and divide that by 2.2

Step 2: Multiply that number depending on your age

  • If you’re younger than 30, multiply by 40
  • If you’re between 30 and 55, multiply by 35
  • If you’re older than 55, multiply by 30

Step 3: Divide that sum by 28.3

Step 4: Your total is how many ounces of water you should drink each day. Divide that number by 8 to see your result in cups.

Please keep in mind these numbers are subjective. If you are extremely active  you should increase your water accordingly. Also if the heat index reads 100 degree plus, it’s probably wise to increase your water so keep those insulated tumblers handy!

What are the health benefits of drinking water?

Water is in everything we do and in everything we need, without water our world would stop spinning. If you are not drinking enough water your body will begin to show signs. Some of the signs include muscle and joint aches and cramps, acne, dark circles under your eyes, and you hair will begin lose its bounce and shine.

You may also experience daytime fatigue and fussy short-term memory. Are you trying to lose weight? There is a reason why personal trainers emphasize increasing you’re water. It’s not just because of the workouts, people often mistake hunger for the bodies cry for water. So there is a good chance you are eating when your body is saying hay I  need water not Cheetos!

Water truly is amazing, the heath benefits of drinking water can go on and on. If you are drinking the right amount of water your body will benefit by having less toxins, as water is the prime mover of all toxins in your body. If your body does not remove these toxins you will begin to develop a slight smell.

As stated earlier, when I am working on a client and after a few minutes of working on them I can start to smell a slight odor. It’s different then B.O. it smells more like chicken broth (your welcome).  This isn’t life threatening at all but it is an indication that your body is trying to talk to you. So often people do not listen to there bodies until something is really wrong and at that point it becomes a bigger deal then if they took action earlier on. So drink up!

Another health benefit you may not have thought of; have you ever experience hot flashes? I don’t mean menopausal flashes, I mean pre-menopausal out of no where your bodies internal temp just spikes or dips. Well; water regulates your temperature, carries nutrients, and oxygen to your cells, it also cushions joints, protects organs and tissue and removes waste.

One more fun fact for ya; you know if you’ve been drinking enough water is if your pee pee is pretty much clear with no sent. Stinky yellow pee pee is no good! My oldest brother is in the Marines and when he was over seas it was a daily occurrence for the superior office to walk around and ask “what color is your P***? Heat exhaustion and dehydration can and will sneak up on you!

So when someone asks how much water should I drink in a day, the answer is if you fell thirsty you are already dehydrated. I carry my 64 oz insulated tumbler around with me everywhere I go. It doesn’t matter if its hot or cold I always have water with me. You should be taking sips of water throughout the day all day.

Your probably thinking, if I drink water all day I would need to use the bathroom all day long and I don’t have time for that. You may actually be surprised to learn that once your body becomes accustomed to a proper level of hydration your need to urinate will decrease. Honest!

For all of you who say “I don’t like water it has no flavor”, this next section is for you.

What are the benefits of drinking lemon water?

Some of you out there can’t stand plain water (weirdos), have no fear there are options for you. Lemon water is an obvious chose. The health benefit of lemon water seriously can go on for days! Here’s just a few for you:

  • helps with indigestion and constipation
  • helps purify the blood
  • it is a natural cleansing agent
  • helps reduce fevers
  • lemon water can increase the shine in your hair
  • helps with acne and eczema
  • lemon mixed with a little honey can help give your skin a natural glow
  •  lemon water can also help control high blood pressure
  • and can help with dizziness and nausea

WOW! That’s a long list for such a small piece of citrus deliciousness. One thing I should mention, the little packets of lemon flavored powder does not count. I hope you realize that’s just Kool-Aid for adults.

Lemon water for weight loss

A question I see come up often is “does lemon water help you lose weight?” The short answer, YES. As stated above lemons have a tremendous amount of medicinal purposes. By ditching high calorie drinks for lemon water you are decreasing your calorie intake which will lead to weight loss over time.

I heard along time ago from a personal trainer that if you do nothing else but cut out soda you will lose 10 pounds in a month. This is obviously subjective to the person and how much soda or pop (depending where your from) drinks in a month but you get the point.

However, lemons do help give your metabolism a boost and keeps your digestive track flowing properly  so in turn this will help you lose weight over time as well.

I do enjoy lemon water but I like to kick it up a notch. If you don’t like the taste of straight lemons, maybe try my lemon cucumber detox water recipe. I do add mint leafs as well as the cucumber and lemons not trying to be gross but if you are a bit irregular at the moment this will clean you out!

What is the best water bottle to keep water cold?

I don’t know about you but I want my water cold, like hurt your teeth cold. Seriously I clean out the ice maker on a daily bases, no I am not iron deficient I just love ice! I have gone through several  insulated tumblers over the years but my most recent ones got me really excited!

I’m not joking I have talked about my new insulated tumbler to my clients, my family, and my dog. I load up this bad boy with ice in the morning and I am not joking the ice will be there the next morning. I carry this thing with me everywhere I go. My clients make fun of me when they see me just chugging away with this thing.

In the past I always used insulated tumblers with a straw but not anymore. I become so grossed out after my last reusable straw I will never use a straw again, at least not reusable. I tried cleaning the straw out but I just couldn’t get it as clean as it needed to be so I strictly  use a twist top tumbler for my everyday bottle. The lid is easy to clean and I just love it!
